Experience the profound serenity of the Last Shangri-La with this expertly curated 6-night, 7-day journey. Designed for travelers seeking a seamless transition from the plains of North Bengal to the high-altitude wonders of the Himalayas, this itinerary covers the "Golden Triangle" of Bhutan: Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. From the architectural grandeur of ancient Dzongs to the soul-stirring hike to the cliffside Tiger’s Nest, every day is balanced with cultural immersion and breathtaking landscapes.
Upon your arrival at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station, you will be met by our representative for a scenic drive through the lush green tea gardens of the Dooars region. As you reach the border town of Phuentsholing, you will notice the distinct shift into Bhutanese architecture at the iconic Bhutan Gate. Check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring the local markets or visiting the Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang temple in the heart of town.
After breakfast, complete the necessary permit formalities at the Bhutan Immigration Office with the assistance of our guide. Once cleared, begin the winding ascent toward Thimphu, the capital city, passing through misty mountain passes and past the magnificent Gedu University. Along the way, enjoy stops at the Chuuzom confluence—where the Thimphu and Paro rivers meet—before checking into your hotel for a relaxing evening in the capital.
Set off early for a full-day excursion to the subtropical Punakha Valley, starting with a climb to the breathtaking Dochula Pass (3,100m). Here, you can walk among the 108 memorial chortens and take in 360-degree views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks before descending into the valley. Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, situated at the junction of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, and walk across the famous suspension bridge draped in prayer flags.
Night stay in Thimphu .
Spend the morning exploring the cultural landmarks of Thimphu, including the massive Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point) which overlooks the entire valley, and the National Memorial Chorten, a hub of daily worship. Visit the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal and the Folk Heritage Museum for a glimpse into traditional life. In the late afternoon, take a picturesque drive along the river-carved valleys to the historic town of Paro.
Prepare for the highlight of your journey—a hike to the world-famous Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest, which clings miraculously to a granite cliff 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor. The trail winds through beautiful pine forests and offers stunning viewpoints where you can hear the faint sound of temple bells. After the descent, you may choose to visit a local farmhouse for a traditional hot stone bath to soothe your muscles after the trek.
Enjoy a morning of sightseeing in Paro, starting with the National Museum (Ta Dzong) to see ancient artifacts and the Rinpung Dzong, a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in the kingdom, before beginning your return journey toward the plains. Descend through the mountains back to Phuentsholing for your final night, enjoying the changing landscape as you head toward the border.
After an early breakfast, check out from your hotel and bid farewell to the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Our driver will transfer you back across the border and through the plains of West Bengal to Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station. You will arrive in time for your onward flight or train, carrying home the peaceful memories of your Bhutanese adventure with North East Horizon Tours and Treks.
