Meghalaya

Meghalaya, meaning the "Abode of Clouds," is a mystical state in Northeast India known for its dramatic landscapes, record-breaking rainfall, and unique indigenous culture. In 2026, it remains a top destination for eco-tourists and adventure seekers due to its pristine waterfalls, ancient "living" infrastructure, and the cleanest villages in Asia.

Best Places to Visit

Meghalaya is primarily divided into the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills. Most travelers focus on the Khasi Hills, but the other regions offer incredible offbeat experiences.

Shillong: The capital, often called the "Scotland of the East." Visit Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, and the Laitlum Canyons for panoramic valley views.

Cherrapunji (Sohra): Famous for the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. Don't miss Nohkalikai Falls (India's tallest plunge fall) and the Mawsmai Caves, seven sisters waterfalls

Dawki: Home to the Umngot River, famous for its crystal-clear emerald water where boats appear to float in mid-air.

Mawlynnong: Renowned as "Asia’s Cleanest Village." It offers a glimpse into sustainable community living and the Riwai Root Bridge.

Jowai: Located in the Jaintia Hills, it features the stunning blue waters of Krang Suri Falls and Phe Phe Falls.

Wari Chora (Garo Hills): A rising "hidden gem" in 2026, this canyon offers breathtaking river views between towering rocky cliffs.

Best Time to Visit

The experience in Meghalaya changes drastically with the seasons:

Peak Season (October to March): The best time for sightseeing. The weather is cool and dry, and the water in Dawki is at its clearest.

Monsoon (June to September): Ideal for "Monsoon Lovers." This is when the waterfalls are at their most powerful and the landscape is an intense vibrant green. However, trekking can be slippery and visibility at viewpoints may be low due to heavy mist.

Spring/Summer (April to June): Pleasant weather (15°C to 25°C), great for escaping the heat of the Indian plains.
