Duration: 9 days / 8 Nights
This 8-night, 9-day grand circuit offers the definitive Bhutanese experience, weaving together the majestic Himalayan peaks, deep-rooted spirituality, and the pristine natural beauty of the Dragon Kingdom. From the vibrant urban culture of Thimphu and the breathtaking glacial valley of Gangtey, to the ancient monastic heartland of Bumthang and the subtropical splendor of Punakha, this journey covers the very best of Western and Central Bhutan. Your adventure culminates in the iconic ascent to the cliffside Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro, providing a perfect balance of immersive cultural heritage, serene nature trails, and architectural wonders.
Your journey begins with a breathtaking flight into Paro, offering glimpses of the world’s highest peaks. Upon arrival, breathe in the crisp mountain air before a scenic drive along the Pa Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers to Thimphu, the world’s only capital without traffic lights. Spend your evening soaking in the local atmosphere at the Craft Bazaar or enjoying a quiet walk along Norzin Lam.
Witness the harmonious blend of the ancient and the modern. Gaze up at the 169-foot golden Buddha Dordenma, then find peace at the National Memorial Chorten. Dive into interactive history at Simply Bhutan, where you can sip traditional butter tea and try your hand at archery. End your day at the majestic Tashichho Dzong, a fortress that glows beautifully at dusk.
Ascend to the Dochula Pass (3,100m), where 108 memorial chortens stand against a backdrop of the snow-capped Himalayas. Descend into the enchanting Phobjikha Valley, a wide, U-shaped glacial valley of stunning beauty. Visit the Gangtey Goemba, an architectural jewel overlooking the winter nesting grounds of the rare Black-Necked Cranes.
Travel deeper into the kingdom’s interior, crossing the Pele La Pass. As you enter Central Bhutan, catch your first glimpse of the formidable Trongsa Dzong, an ancestral home to the Royal family. By evening, arrive in the Jakar Valley of Bumthang, often described as the "Switzerland of the East" for its lush meadows and pine-scented air.
Bumthang is the religious heartland of Bhutan. Spend the day visiting the Jambay Lhakhang (one of the nation's oldest temples) and Kurjey Lhakhang, where the imprint of Guru Rinpoche remains. Balance the spiritual with the local by visiting a Swiss cheese factory and the Red Panda Brewery for a taste of unique Bhutanese-European fusion.
Begin your journey back toward the west, winding through mist-covered mountains and rhododendron forests. The drive back to Punakha offers a second chance to spot Himalayan wildlife and enjoy the changing landscape as the altitude drops into the warm, subtropical valley.
Explore the Punakha Dzong, widely considered the most beautiful fortress in the country, situated at the junction of the "Mother" and "Father" rivers. Walk the "Fertility Temple" trail at Chimi Lhakhang before driving back to Paro. Visit the ancient Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th-century shrine that exudes a profound sense of peace.
The crown jewel of your trip awaits. Embark on a pilgrimage-like hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched precariously on a granite cliff 900 meters above the valley. The spiritual energy and the panoramic views are life-changing. Celebrate your final evening in Bhutan with a traditional Hot Stone Bath to rejuvenate your spirit.
After a final Bhutanese breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport. As you fly out over the emerald valleys, take with you the "Gross National Happiness" and memories that will last a lifetime.
